From the Parent of a Missionary
I don`t know if any of you remember President Eyring`s talk from April General conference, Mountains to climb. But he told a story about how he prayed for challenges, and then got them. He said that he received a clear confirmation that God answered his prayers and that he was able to grow from the experience. Well, I made the mistake of putting his counsel into practice, and I prayed for challenges last week. And they came!
But we actually had a pretty good week, even though we had rough times. Both Elder Torres and I got a pretty bad cold this week. And Elder Torres` fragile used-to-the-heat body is having a hard time adjusting to the cold that is hitting our area. We are high up in the mountains, so the fog and a cold wind hit us every night. And then it is pretty warm during the day. That is pretty much a recipe for a cold and a bad cough, which is what we both caught. We had some challenges getting out to work, but whenever we did, we saw results.
A lot of our investigators are started to move forward where they weren`t before. Remember Denis from last week, who showed up to church all on his own? We had our first lesson with him this week, and before we even started teaching he told us that he wanted to get baptized. We taught him 3 times this week and he has a baptismal date for the 29th. That is REALLY fast, but he`s ready. The only problem is that he is an orphan and technically doesnt live in our area any more, even though `he did when we found him originally. We`ll see how that works out, because he wants to go to our ward — he already has friends there and went on an excursion to the nearby volcano with the Young Men.
Unfortunately we have lost almost all contact with Ruben. We don`t know where he is, really. We always knock his door, but only his mom is ever there. She says that he still hasn`t smoked, but we have no idea.
We also realized that every single family that we`re teaching isn`t married. So this week we taught eternal marriage and committed three families to get married. We might have to give them a little push to get them to do it, but Im sure they can get there. That`s Estela, Eduardo, and a new family we found, Fam. Rodriguez.
We also found a new investigator, Marisela. She`s a single mom with one little boy, and when we gave her the first lesson, she told us that she thought it was true. She is reading the things we give her, and says she is going to pray. And when they actually read and pray, they receive an answer! We will keep working with her.
We also found out that they are going to put two more missionaries in our area, in Piedra Parada. That`s the part of our area that`s a 30 minute walk away and where we never go. And now they`re putting missionaries there! I`m sure that in no time they will have their own branch and eventually a ward.
Well, Im going to send a bunch of pictures now. Have a great week, everyone!
